The Ramadan celebration is here! 💃🏼

I for one, can not wait to celebrate with my brothers and sisters! Can you?

Ramadan is that Holy one month period where we fast, pray and stay sacred. A celebration that is observed to remember and honor the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) receipt of the Holy Qur’an. While this is a beautiful celebration to observe, it is important that we also understand what really we are celebrating, the history of the season, what we should do during the fasting period, what not to do for our prayers to be acceptable, and also have within our reach, wishes and messages that we could share with our friends, family, spiritual leaders amidst others. Stay with me!

What Is Ramadan?

A-graphic design-showing-a-boy-trying-to-figure-out-what-Ramadan-is

The Ramadan celebration is a grand celebration observed by the Muslims around the world in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. It is that time of the year where you refrain from a number of things including eating between dawn and musk, bad habits, negative thoughts, etc, keeping in mind to also have outdoor fun activities with family, neighbors, friends, and colleagues.

In this Month, Muslims are known to commonly greet themselves with Ramadan Mubarak and Ramadan Kareem. Although these greetings are used interchangeably, they mean slightly different things.

What does Ramadan Mubarak mean?

Ramadan Mubarak simply means “Blessed Ramadan” so when you use Mubarak, it is a request that Ramadan be blessed.

What does Ramadan Kareem mean?

Ramadan Kareem is usually said to wish someone a generous Ramadan” so when you use “Kareem”, it is a request for Ramadan to be one of generosity.

While it has long been custom to greet Ramadan Mubarak during the holy month, some people believe that Ramadan Kareem is inappropriate because they say expecting or giving generosity goes against the spirit of fasting and prayer, claiming that it shouldn’t be said during the Ramadan month. Some others who use it to express how generously their petitions will be answered for them, think it is acceptable because it refers to the benefits one receives after the sacred month.

The choice of whether to say “Ramadan Mubarak” or “Ramadan Kareem” as a greeting is completely up to you as an individual, Although both are believed to convey positive emotions and wishes, it is essential to understand your audience and their perspective on the individual greetings. While your intentions may only be to greet another, if you don’t choose carefully, you could upset them.

The History Of Ramadan

Learners-dorm-design-showing-the-text-history-of-Ramadan

The word Ramadan originates from the Arabic root ‘ar-ramad’ or ‘ramida’, which means scorching heat or scarcity of rations.

Ramadan Kareem was first celebrated in 624 CE. The Hijra, the first year of the Islamic calendar, was in its second year. According to theology, Prophet Muhammad continued to receive “revelations” from Allah through the angel Gabriel during this period. All Muslims were instructed to observe fasting in the upcoming month in a message that the Almighty gave to him in the month of Sha’aban, which is immediately preceding Ramadan Kareem.

In addition, chapter 2 (Surah al Baqarah), verse 185, states the revelation that serves as the philosophical foundation for Ramadan fasting.

More History

The Qur’an, which provides clear proofs of guidance and criteria for behavior, was unveiled during the month of Ramadan. Therefore, whoever sees the new moon of the month is to observe a fast; if they are ill or traveling, they should observe a fast on an equivalent number of other days. Allah wants you to finish the period and praise Him for how He led you; perhaps you will feel grateful. Allah wants you to have ease and does not want you to experience hardship.

As a result, the Ramadan celebration or Ramazan has been celebrated since 624 CE, or almost 15 years after the founding of Islam. According to the Quran, it is to be practiced by all Muslims who have reached puberty, and those who can keep it. Moreover, it is the fourth pillar of Islam.

Aside that the doctrines in the Quran requires Muslims to fast in this holy month, it has also been found through the hadith that the very first section of Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammed during this holy month. Not only the Quran, the hadith claims that four other integral holy books related to monotheism – Tablets of Messenger Ibrahim, Torah of Moses, Psalms and Gospel (both sections of Bible) were revealed during this month.

Furthermore, the Ramadan Muslim celebration month is known for another significant event, which is the Battle of Badr. The Battle of Badr was the first battle between the Muslims of Medina and the pagans of Mecca. It was fought in 624 C.E in present-day Saudi Arabia, with the Muslims gaining victory, and is mentioned in the Quran and recorded in Hadiths.

What To Do and What Not To Do During The Ramadan Celebration

The holy Quran was unveiled during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and Muslims practice a 30-day fast from sunrise to sunset.

Muslims typically eat suhoor in the early morning hours before breaking their fast with iftar, which is a meal served after sunset. Not only should one refrain from eating and drinking during the fasting periods of the day during Ramadan, but also from bad behaviors, routines, and much more. The hunger and thirst one feels is supposed to develop patience, self-restraint and gratitude.

During the Ramadan Celebration, there are a number of things to be done. Some of these include:

  • Recite the Quran constantly: The holy month is a time to communicate with the Almighty. The Ramadan celebration month is the month when one should recite the Quran as many times as possible, because this is the month Prophet Muhammed received the Holy book. Not only should you read the Quran, it is important you reflect on it.

  • Observe the Fast: One of the best practices when it comes to the Islamic culture is fasting during Ramadan. It is also believed that fasting during this season has an higher spiritual rewards. Moreover, fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam so should be observed with utmost sincerity.

  • Offer Prayers: It is important for all Muslims to offer Salat during Ramadan, which means offering prayers five times a day. Salat is one of the five pillars of Islam and helps Muslims to seek Allah’s forgiveness and guidance. These prayers are known as Salat al-fajr, Salat al-zuhr, Salat al-‘asr, Salat al-maghrib and Salat al-‘isha. Muslims should perform Dhikr meaning appreciating Allah through their prayers.

  • Give to the needy: The month of Ramadan preaches and encourages compassion, love, so it is a good time of the year to offer some of what you have and can give out to those in needs. You could choose to prepare some nice sumptuous meals and share, give out gifts, clothing, money, etc. The list goes on and on.

  • Maintain Celibacy: The month of Ramadan is a period to indulge in intense prayer and create a stronger bond with the Almighty, so Muslims should maintain celibacy during this period.

What Not To Do During The Ramadan Celebration?

While observing the fast and prayer required in the month of Ramadan, it is important to take note of what not to do in this holy month. Some of those things to do away with in the month of Ramadan include;

  • Do not smoke: During Ramadan, smoking is strictly forbidden. Islam is divided on the issue, with some scholars arguing that it should be completely avoided in day-to-day living. However, it is not permitted while fasting in any manner during the Ramadan celebration.

  • Do not hold grudges: Islam is a religion of harmony, so even outside of Ramadan, Muslims are expected to make amends with those they have grievances against. In Ramadan, it is especially important because failing to do so could render one’s fast void.

  • Keep the music as low as possible: During this holy season, be considerate of those who are fasting or praying. Loud music listening can be disruptive and is not permitted during Ramadan. Therefore, use headphones to listen to music so that others cannot hear it.

  • Avoid sleeping excessively: The sacred Ramadan Muslim celebration month does not forbid sleeping, but Muslims are encouraged to spend a large portion of the month praying and reciting the Quran, day and night.

  •  Stay away from sex during fasting hours: It is forbidden for Muslims to have intercourse during the day while they are fasting during Ramadan. Therefore, if you practice Islam, use this month to concentrate on your spiritual development and save the passion for after sundown.
