What are zip codes and postal codes?

Zip codes and postal codes are both used in various countries to identify precise locations for mail delivery. In the United States of America, zip codes are utilized, while postal codes are used in other countries, such as Nigeria.

Since 1963, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has employed a zip code system of postal codes. It is made up of a set of digits that guide the selection of a specific area for mail delivery. A postal code, on the other hand, is a set of letters and digits that helps to identify a specific place for mail delivery in a country other than the United States.

Zip codes vs. postal codes in Nigeria

The major difference between zip codes and postal codes is that zip codes are used in the United States and the Philippines, while postal codes are used in other nations such as Nigeria. Zip codes are five digits long, however postal codes in Nigeria are six digits long.

Moreover, zip codes in the United States are used to identify specific areas within a state, while postal codes in Nigeria are used to identify specific LGAs within a state.

How Do Zip Codes and Postal Codes Work in Nigeria?

Postal codes in Nigeria are assigned based on geographical zones and regions. The first digit of the postal code represents the area, the second and third digits the district, and the final three digits the delivery location. For example, the postal code for Abuja’s Central Business District is 900211, where 900 represents the area, 2 the district, and 11 the exact delivery address.

In essence, zip codes are not evenly dispersed around the country and are allocated by foreign courier companies. Those who utilize courier services may be confused since each one has a different procedure for allocating zip codes.

Why are zip codes and postal codes important?

Zip and postal codes are important because they help ensure that mail and parcels are delivered to their proper destinations on time and safely. They also aid in commerce and trade globally by giving an accurate method of identifying certain locations.

A proper postal code is extremely crucial in Nigeria since it might impact the delivery of important papers such as passports, bank statements, and other sensitive goods. These things may be delayed or even lost in transit if a suitable postal code is not provided, causing frustration and even loss.
