Do you want to learn how to make Nigerian fish pie? I am not talking about the oyinbo baked fish pie 🤪
You know those deep fried Nigerian fish pies Igbo boys sell at the road side? You love them? Well I do love them and I crave for them so much. I might not be able to always purchase from them so I thought it is best to learn how to make it myself at home.
If you love them as well, don’t worry I got you covered
The Nigerian fish pie is a very popular deep-fry snack and is shaped almost like, meat pie and chicken pie, however, other shapes have been adopted.

MAKING YOUR NIGERIAN FISH PIE
- Put your fish in a pot, turn on your fire and let it boil for 15mins. Add seasoning to taste.
- When done, allow the fish to cool, remove the bones, and mash with your hands.
- Heat up the oil and fry the onions. Add your grated and diced carrots and stir to combine.
- Add your cayenne pepper to your taste, then add your cube-sized Irish/ sweet potatoes.
- Add your stock (from your boiled fish), cover, and allow the potatoes to cook till soft.
- Add your mashed fish, then add your seasoning and adjust if necessary.
- Remove from heat and set aside.
- Add flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder in a bowl and mix well.
- Add your butter/margarine. Mix well with hands or a mixer, and the results have a crumbled texture.
- Add water and mix thoroughly. Do this until you have a non-stretchy dough.
- Place the dough on the surface (before doing this, sprinkle some flour on the surface)
- Using a pie cutter, cut the desired shape of your pie.
- Fill up your pie with filling and fry.
- These ingredients and recipes are very similar to the fish roll recipe. The minor differences are the shape of the dough and the fish roll being deep-fried instead of baked.
Fish pie can be taken with juice and any other drink. Other finger foods you can try out are our Plantain chips, Meat pie, Chicken pie, Doughnut, and sausage roll.
