Chicken pies are shaped just like meat pies, but to make chicken pies, you have to fill your dough with chicken instead of beef.

Well, you could say that chicken pie is meat pie’s elder brother 😉It’s chicken, so it has to be the elder😅

Chicken pie is sold in many restaurants, and It’s a snack served as a starter at parties, official events, picnics, and gatherings in general. However, there is this notion that chicken pie is served at majorly expensive gatherings, but Its tastiness makes it necessary to learn how to make Nigerian Chicken pie.

PASTRY

  • All-purpose flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Cold water
  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Salt

FILLING

  • Shredded chicken
  • Potato
  • Onion
  • Carrot
  • Pepper 
  • Thyme
  • Flour
  • Oil
  • Beaten egg 
  • Chicken broth
  • Salt

PREPARING YOUR CHICKEN PIE

  • First, mix flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder to make Nigerian chicken pie. When you mix it, it has a crumbly texture.
  • Crack open two eggs and add them to the flour mixture; mix until dough is formed. Add a little water if the dough is not mixed properly. (This is optional, but you can refrigerate the dough for about 20 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a large pan, add the onion and allow to fry for 3-4 minutes. Add diced carrots and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add the chicken and cook. Season with salt, pepper, thyme, and flour. Stir and cook for some minutes
  • Add in potatoes stir well, and then pour in the water/broth.
  • Allow cooking for a few more minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350F (175C), then cut out circles from the dough, as many as you desire your meat pie to be. 
  • Using a spoon, cut out a portion and put it in the circle’s centre. Dip a pastry brush in a beaten egg and apply it on the edges of the circle. Cover the circle making it into a crescent shape, then seal it with a fork.
  • Using a fork, make a hole in the middle of the pie to allow steam to pass through, then bake for 25-30 minutes until golden. 

When you make Nigerian chicken pie at home, allow it to cool before you serve it, and enjoy it with a chilled drink. There are other tasty pastries you can try out, like Other snacks you will want to try, including Puff Puff, Sausage rolls, Meat pie, Fish Pie, Scotched eggs, Buns, and egg rolls.
