HOW TO MAKE MOIMOI – SEVEN LIVES

MOIMOI is a traditional meal made from Majorly beans and ingredients like pepper, onions, egg, fish etc. It is a delicious delight and is often referred to as having “seven lives” proteins added to the bean pudding while making e.g Fish, Boiled egg, Boiled liver, Crayfish, Chicken and chicken stock, Moi moi can be made using Leaves like Banana leaves, Nylons, heatproof bowls. 

When making MOIMOI, it is important to blend the beans until they form a smooth, semi-thick paste and to add just enough water to blend properly.

INGREDIENTS

  • Black-eyed Peas or Honey Beans (often called Ewa oloyin)
  • Peppers ( for a good outcome use habanero pepper and scotch bonnet.
  • Onion  
  • Crayfish (Powdered crayfish can be used)
  • Vegetable Oil/Palm oil 
  • Stock Cubes 
  • Fish (Salmon or Mackerel)
  • Hard-boiled Eggs 
  • Boiled beef liver (Optional)
  • Salt

MAKING YOUR MOIMOI

  • Pick out the stones and dirt from your beans, wash and soak for 20 Minutes.
  • Start washing the beans with the intent to peel the outer coat, rubbing them together using your palms.
  • The peeled coats will begin to rise to the top. Sieve it out so you can see your progress, and do this continually until the beans are cleaned out.
  • Next, to Blend your beans, Add your pepper, onions, stock Cubes, salt, and crayfish. Depending on the number of beans, you can either grind at a local blender around your area or use your high-power blender.
  • Pour your ground beans into a bowl, add the groundnut or Palm oil, and mix.
  • Add chunks of liver and fish, add keep mixing.
  • Using Leaves, Nylons, or a heatproof bowl, pour a reasonable amount into each bowl and add the egg on top of each portion.
  • Place a pot of water on the stove, allow it to boil, and add in your nylon, bowls, or leaves.
  • Cover up the pot and allow it to cook for about 45mins, ensure that the water in the pot does not dry up, and top it if it goes down.

Moi Moi can be eaten alone and is a rich and healthy meal due to its abundant ingredients. It can also be eaten with Garri, Corn pudding (Pap) or custard. Other traditional foods you can try out as well include Plantain porridge, Akara, and Gizdodo.
