Learning how to make meat pie is soothing! You get to make your meat filling yourself and to your best taste.
Do you remember those Igbo guys that push glass container around claiming to sell meat pie and all they sell is dough with either onion or strictly potato. They can make you forget the actual taste of a standard meat pie. Well, you dont have to worry, i will be taking you through how to make the best meat pie.
Meatpies are shaped in a crescent, have crown-like tips, and are filled with Beef, carrots, potatoes, onions, and other fillings. It is sold in a lot of restaurants and It’s a snack served as a starter at parties, official events, picnics, and gatherings in general.
INGREDIENTS
Pastry:
- All-purpose flour
- Sugar
- Baking powder
- Cold water
- Butter
- Eggs
- Salt
Filling:
- Ground beef
- Potato
- Onion
- Carrot
- Pepper
- Thyme
- Flour
- Oil
- Beaten egg
- Beef broth
- Salt
MAKING YOUR NIGERIAN MEATPIE
- In a bowl mix together flour, sugar, salt and baking powder when you mix it together it has a crumbly texture.
- Crack open two eggs and add them to the flour mixture, mix until dough is formed. Add a little water if the dough is not mixed properly. (This is optional, but you can refrigerate the dough for about 20 minutes.
- Heat oil in a large pan then add the onion and allow to fry for 3-4 minutes. Add diced carrots and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add the meat and cook. Season with salt, pepper, thyme and flour. stir and cook for some minutes
- Add in potatoes stir well then pour in the water/broth.
- Allow cooking for a few more minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350F (175C) then cut out circles from the dough, as many as you desire your meatpie to be.
- Using a spoon, cut out a portion and put in the centre of the circle, dip a pastry brush in a beaten egg and apply it on the edges of the circle, cover the circle making it into a crescent shape, then seal it with a fork.
- Using a fork, make a hole in the middle of the pie to allow steam to pass through, then bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden.
Allow your pie to cool before you serve, and enjoy it with a chilled drink. There are other tasty pastries you can try out, like Other snacks you will want to try out include Puff Puff, Sausage roll, Meat pie, Fish Pie, Scotched eggs, Buns, and egg roll.
