Puff puff is a popular snack. A brown round-like ball of dough as big as a tennis ball eaten as finger food. However, it is also a snack that is a significant part of the childhood of many Nigerians and is usually served at parties, events, etc., as small chops. It is made with flour, yeast, pepper and sugar.
INGREDIENTS
- All-purpose flour
- Sugar
- Nutmeg
- Salt
- Yeast
- Onion
- Habanero pepper or chili
- Water
- Vegetable oil
MAKING YOUR NIGERIAN PUFF PUFF
- Sieve flour into a bowl. This is done to remove lumps or stones.
- Mix the yeast and sugar with a half cup of warm water
- Add the flour, salt, and nutmeg with the yeast and sugar mixture, add water, and mix, ensuring that the batter is not too thick or light.
- Cover the bowl with an airtight lid and place it in a warm place for 30-45 minutes or till the batter doubles in size. The yeast aids this.
- Pour the oil into a deep pot, and let it heat up. To check if your oil is hot enough, take a pinch of batter and put in the oil. If it floats to the top, then it’s ready.
- Use your palm to scoop up the batter the size of a tennis ball and put in the oil. You are doing it right if the batter forms round balls.
- Using your frying stick turn the balls while on the fire occasionally to ensure all sides are brown. Once this is achieved, take it out.
It is very easy to make Puff puffs, and you can enjoy them with drinks and juice or eaten as a side snack. However, if you do not follow the instructions carefully, it is possible your puff puff comes out flat. Moreover, there are also other finger foods you can try out, like Puff Puff, Sausage roll, Meat pie, Fish Pie, Chin Chin, Egg roll, and Scotch egg.
