HOW TO MAKE NIGERIAN SCOTCH EGGS

Learn how to make scotch eggs and understand the difference between scotch eggs and egg rolls.

Scotch eggs are different from egg rolls, even though they look alike, having a similar round shape.

Compared to scotch eggs, egg rolls are more like Nigerian buns. A Scotch egg is made from seasoned mashed sausage meat that is wrapped around a hard-boiled egg and then coated with egg and bread crumbs. While on the other hand, you can make an egg roll by deep-frying a hard-boiled egg wrapped in dough. However, they are both fried with a boiled egg on the inside.

Scotched eggs are brown balls of fried dough and egg filling enjoyed by a lot of Nigerians and the great thing is it is easy to make. It’s a snack served as a starter at parties, official events, picnics, and gatherings in general.

INGREDIENTS

  • Eggs
  • Sausage Meat
  • Cooking Oil 
  • All purpose Flour
  • Black Pepper
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Nutmeg
  • Spring Onion
  • Stock cubes
  • Dried Thyme

MAKING YOUR NIGERIAN SCOTCH EGGS

  • Boil, and peel the eggs (The number of eggs in your oil depends on the number of eggrolls you wish to make). 
  • In a bowl, mix sausage meat, thyme, nutmeg, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and stock cubes, and add chopped spring onions.
  • Break an egg into another bowl; add the flour in another bowl. 
  • Take one of the boiled eggs and coat it with flour. 
  • Wrap the egg around a portion of sausage meat, then cover with flour. 
  • Dip into the egg mixture (Do this for all the eggs)
  • Heat some oil over medium heat in a pan and fry the scotch eggs until they turn golden brown.

Your scorched eggs is best served cold, and with any drink of choice zobo is a good drink that will go with it, Hot milk is also a good option. Other homemade snacks you can make are Puff Puff, Sausage roll, Meat pie, Fish Pie, Chin Chin, Buns, and egg roll.
