HOW TO MAKE POUNDED YAM

Pounded Yam is a traditional side dish, that can be eaten with any soup of choice. This kind of side dish is commonly called “Swallow” by Nigerians, which is referred to a kind of food that you have to mould in your hands, dip in soup and swallow just like Amala, Semo or Eba. and the food originated from the people of the southwestern part of Nigeria. It is made by pounding cooked yams and takes quite a time to prepare.

INGREDIENT

  • 3 Tuber of Yam
  • Water

MAKING YOUR POUNDED YAM

  1. Slice the yams into Smal cubes after peeling them.
  2. Wash and place the yams in a pot and add water to the level of the yams.
  3. Let it cook for about 25 minutes
  4. Your yams can be pounded using a mortar and pestle or put inside the food processor and blended until it becomes smooth and lumps are absent.

Pounded yam can be served with any traditional soup of your choice and is not the only side dish others include Semovita, Amala, like  Efo Riro, as well as Egusi soup, Nkwobi, Ogbono soup, Banga soup, Bitterleaf soup, Edikang Ikong Soup, Nsala Soup (Ofe Nsala), and Afang Soup.
