HOW TO MAKE ZOBO DRINK

Before now, zobos are mostly sold in used water bottles, especially in schools. I remember always purchasing zobo in order to cut costs. Rather than buying a soft drink, I will buy zobo so I can have my snack with a drink. A friend was going to celebrate her birthday, and we needed to cut costs, so I thought, why can’t I learn how to make a zobo drink so we can have it rather than purchasing soft drinks? Well, I made it and it was great!

So I want to also show you how to make the best zobo drink. Zobo drinks are relishing natural drinks with great health benefits

“Zobo” as the drink is commonly called in Nigeria is also referred to as “Hibiscus drink” and is taken worldwide. It is made from the leaves of a flower which is a variety of the Hibiscus flower referred to as the “Hibiscus sabdariffa”.  It is a natural drink that is easy to make.

INGREDIENTS

  • Dry zobo leaves 
  • Water
  • Pineapple
  • Cloves (konafuru)
  • Ginger

MAKING YOUR ZOBO DRINK

  • Rinse out the dust from the leaves with water. 
  • Grind the cloves (Konafuru) into a powder.
  • Wash and peel off the skin of the ginger and blend or grind.
  • Wash, peel and cut the pineapple into thin slices
  • In a pot, put the washed zobo leaves and pour enough water to cover them.
  • Cook on medium heat and leave to boil for a few minutes.
  • Add the ginger and the garlic, add more water and keep boiling for at least 30 minutes. At this time the zobo leaves will have softened. 
  • Turn off the heat and set it aside to cool down completely.
  • Blend your pineapples while your zobo cools.
  • When it cools, sieve out the zobo leaves. Pour the juice through a sieve cloth to remove tiny particles.
  • Sieve the pineapple through the sieve cloth to remove any particles.
  • Add any artificial flavors of your choice and stir, Pour into bottles and refrigerate.

Zobo drink can be taken alone, you can also garnish it with watermelon, Orange, or Lime slices. You can also try out ice creams, and other finger foods like Puff Puff, Sausage roll, Meat pie, Fish Pie, Scotched eggs, Buns, and egg roll.
