O Holy Night Christmas Song, history, and lyrics
O HOLY NIGHT โ€“ Lady smiling beautifully

โ€œO Holy Nightโ€ is a popular English Christmas song /carol, also known as โ€œCantique de Noelโ€. It was written in 1843ย  by Placide Cappeau, a French language poet and wine seller from southern France. In 1847, he was asked by the local parish priest to write a Christmas poem to celebrate the church organโ€™s renovation. Cappeau reached out to his friend Adolphe Charles Adams who is a composer, to set the poem into music. The song was set to reflect on the birth of Jesus and humanityโ€™s redemption.

The French version of โ€œO holy nightโ€ was later written in English in 1855,ย  by John Sullivan Dwight, Editor of Dwightโ€™s Journal of Music.

Lyrics

1.

O Holy night! The stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Saviorโ€™s birth

Long lay the world in sin and error pining

โ€˜Til He appears and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices

For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees; O hear the Angelโ€™s voices!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born

O night, O Holy night, O night divine!

2.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming

With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand

So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming

Here come the Wise Men from Orient land

The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger

In all our trials born to be our friend

He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger

Behold your King; before Him lowly bend

Behold your King; before Him lowly bend

3.ย ย

Truly He taught us to love one another;

His law is love and His Gospel is Peace

Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother

And in His name, all oppression shall cease

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we

Let all within us Praise His Holy name

Christ is the Lord; O praise His name forever!

His power and glory evermore proclaim

His power and glory evermore proclaim

and his cradle was a stall;

with the poor and mean and lowly,

lived on earth our Savior holy.

through his own redeeming love,

for that child, so dear and gentle,

is our Lord in heavโ€™n above,

and he leads his children on

to the place where he is gone.

4.ย

Not in that poor, lowly stable

with the oxen standing by

we shall see him, but in heaven,

set at Godโ€™s right hand on high.

Then like stars his children crowned,

all in white, his praise will sound.

Representation of Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.

The Hymn was first written as a text by Philips Brooks (1835-1893) who was an Episcopal Priest. He got his inspiration for the text when he visited the village of Bethlehem in Sanjak of Jerusalem in 1865. Three years later, the English Christmas song was added to the text by a church organist Lewis Redner and was sung by the local Sunday school childrenโ€™s choir.ย ย

Lyrics

1.ย

O little town of Bethlehem,

how still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

the silent stars go by;

yet in thy dark streets shineth

the everlasting light.

The hopes and fears of all the years

are met in thee tonight.

2.ย

For Christ is born of Mary,

and, gathered all above

while mortals sleep, the angels keep

their watch of wondโ€™ring love.

O morning stars, together

proclaim the holy birth,

and praises sing to God the King

and peace to all the earth.

3.

How silently, how silently,

the wondrous gift is givโ€™n!

So God imparts to human hearts

the blessings of his heavโ€™n.

No ear may hear his coming,

but in this world of sin,

where meek souls will receive him, still

the dear Christ enters in.

4

O holy Child of Bethlehem,

descend to us, we pray,

cast out our sin and enter in,

be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels

the great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us,

our Lord Immanuel!

Xmas-Songs-Carols-Jingle-Bells-Jingle-Bells
Red Christmas Jingle bells with bow on shiny background snowflakes

This was originally written as a thanksgiving song but over the years it became a Christmas song.ย

The song was written by Bobby Helms in 1957 and composed by his friend and session guitarist, Hank Garland. However, two other people have claimed rights to the English Christmas song: Joseph Carleton Beal and James Ross Boothe. They claimed to have written the original version of the song but at the time the song was called โ€œJingle Bell Hopโ€, and it was given to Helms by a Decca executive to record. Helms however was not entirely okay with the song, so he and his guitarist went to work changing the music, tempo, and lyrics of the song and adding an additional verse to the song, and then titled it โ€œJingle Bell Rockโ€. Below is the version of the song that is widely known today.

Lyrics

1.

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock

Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring

Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun

Now the jingle hop has begun.

2.

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock

Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time

Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square

In the frosty air.

3.

What a bright time, itโ€™s the right time

To rock the night away

Jingle bell time is a swell time

To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh

Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet

Jingle around the clock

Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet

Thatโ€™s the jingle bell,

Thatโ€™s the jingle bell,

Thatโ€™s the jingle bell rock

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen

Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen

But do you recall

The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Had a very shiny nose

And if you ever saw it

You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer

Used to laugh and call him names

They never let poor Rudolph

Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve

Santa came to say

โ€œRudolph, with your nose so bright

Wonโ€™t you guide my sleigh tonight?โ€

Then how the reindeer loved him

As they shouted out with glee

BEST-ENGLISH-CHRISTMAS-SONGS-&-CAROLS-THEIR-HISTORY-&-LYRICS-all-i-want-for-christmas-is-you
A cheerful young woman with Christmas head gear crosses her fingers for good luck, prays, and hopes dreams come true this Christmas.

This song is an all-time Christmas love song and was written and co-written by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff respectively in 1934. At the time, English Christmas songs were not performed by a lot of artists because it was presumed to be the kind of projects artists take when they are losing fame. However, Mariah Carey wrote and released the song and it had gone ahead to top charts in both the UK and the US.ย

Lyrics

I donโ€™t want a lot for Christmas

There is just one thing I need

I donโ€™t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree

I just want you for my own

More than you could ever know

Make my wish come true

All I want for Christmas is you

Yeah

I donโ€™t want a lot for Christmas

There is just one thing I need (and I)

Donโ€™t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree

I donโ€™t need to hang my stocking there upon the fireplace

Santa Claus wonโ€™t make me happy with a toy on Christmas Day

I just want you for my own

More than you could ever know

Make my wish come true

All I want for Christmas is you

You, baby

Oh, I wonโ€™t ask for much this Christmas

I wonโ€™t even wish for snow (and I)

Iโ€™m just gonna keep on waiting underneath the mistletoe

I wonโ€™t make a list and send it to the North Pole for Saint Nick

I wonโ€™t even stay awake to hear those magic reindeer click

โ€˜Cause I just want you here tonight

Holding on to me so tight

What more can I do?

Oh, baby, all I want for Christmas is you

You, baby

Oh-oh, all the lights are shining so brightly everywhere (so brightly, baby)

And the sound of childrenโ€™s laughter fills the air (oh, oh, yeah)

And everyone is singing (oh, yeah)

I hear those sleigh bells ringing

Santa, wonโ€™t you bring me the one I really need? (Yeah, oh)

Wonโ€™t you please bring my baby to me?

Oh, I donโ€™t want a lot for Christmas

This is all Iโ€™m asking for

I just wanna see my baby standing right outside my door

Oh, I just want you for my own

More than you could ever know

Make my wish come true

Oh, baby, all I want for Christmas is you

You, baby

All I want for Christmas is you, baby

All I want for Christmas is you, baby

All I want for Christmas is you, baby

All I want for Christmas (all I really want) is you, baby

All I want (I want) for Christmas (all I really want) is you, baby

Four colored lights

Three boughs of holly

Two candy canes

And a song for the Christmas tree

On the 12th day of Christmas

My good friends brought to me

All their good wishes

Gifts for one and all

Some mistletoe

A guardian angel

Gold and silver tinsel

Candles a-glowing

Little silver bells

A shining star

Four colored lights

Three boughs of holly

Two candy canes

And a song for the Christmas tree

17. MARY DID YOU KNOW

LIST-OF-THE-MOST-POPULAR-TRADITIONAL-ENGLISH-CHRISTMAS-SONGS-&-CAROLS-THEIR-HISTORY-&-LYRICS
Mary, Did You Know ???

This is a script that was written by Mark lowry for a Christmas program at his church in 1984. When asked about his inspiration behind the song, he saidย

โ€œI just tried to put into words the unfathomable. I started thinking of the questions I would have for her if I were to sit down & have coffee with Mary. You know; what was it like raising Christ? what did you know? what didnโ€™t you know?ย

The lyrics however have received a lot of backlash, where people describe them as lacking scriptural or theological depth. The English Christmas song was put to music by Buddy Greene in 1991.

Lyrics

Mary, did you know that your baby boy

Would one day walk on water?

Mary, did you know that your baby boy

Would save our sons and daughters?

Did you know that your baby boy

Has come to make you new?

This child that you delivered, will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know that your baby boy

Will give sight to a blind man?

Mary, did you know that your baby boy

Will calm the storm with his hand?

Did you know that your baby boy

Has walked where angels trod?

When you kiss your little baby

You kiss the face of God

Mary, did you know?

Mary, did you know?

Mary, did you know? Did you know?

Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know?

Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know?

Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know?

The blind will see, the deaf will hear

The dead will live again

The lame will leap, the dumb will speak

The praises of the Lamb

Mary, did you know that your baby boy

Is Lord of all creation?

Mary, did you know that your baby boy

Would one day rule the nations?

Did you know that your baby boy

Is heavenโ€™s perfect Lamb?

That sleeping child youโ€™re holding is the great, I Am

Mary, did you know? (Mary, did you know?)

Mary, did you know? (Mary, did you know?)

Mary, did you know? Oh

18. O HOLY NIGHT

BEST-TRADITIONAL-ENGLISH-CHRISTMAS-SONGS-&-CAROLS-THEIR-HISTORY-&-LYRICS-OH-HOLY-NIGHT
Christmas eve, midnight / tucked away in a warm home / with the glowing lights

In 1843 Poet Placide Cappeau wrote, โ€œO Holy Nightโ€ in French which meant โ€œCantique de Noelโ€ to celebrate an important church event. The poem was later set to music that same year by Adolphe Adam which was then premiered in 1847 by the opera singer, Emily Laurey. The English Christmas song has now become a well-known Christmas carol, this English version of the song is credited to John Sullivan Dwight.

Lyrics

1.ย

O Holy night! The stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Saviorโ€™s birth

Long lay the world in sin and error pining

โ€˜Til He appears and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices

For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees; O hear the Angel voices!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born

O night, O Holy night, O night divine!

2.

ย Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming

With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand

So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming

Here come the Wise Men from Orient land

The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger

In all our trials born to be our friend

He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger

Behold your King; before Him lowly bend

Behold your King; before Him lowly bend

3.

Truly He taught us to love one another;

Children singing Christmas carol song: โ€œWe Wish You A Merry Christmasโ€

The Origin of this carol has not been made clear, many believe it to be an old English Christmas song, popular around Christmas time and sung for the wealthy to give out gifts or treats to carolers. It was Bristol-based composer and organist Arthur Warrel who made the carol popular when he arranged the tune for singers at the University of Bristol where he lectured. It was sung at a concert in 1935 and his composition went ahead to be published by Oxford University Press with the title โ€œA Merry Christmas: West Country traditional songโ€.

Lyrics

We wish you a merry Christmas

We wish you a merry Christmas

We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year

Good tidings we bring to you and your kin

We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year

Oh, bring us some figgy pudding

Oh, bring us some figgy pudding

Oh, bring us some figgy pudding

And bring it right here

Good tidings we bring to you and your kin

We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year

We wonโ€™t go until we get some

We wonโ€™t go until we get some

We wonโ€™t go until we get some

Three Kings

โ€œWe three kingsโ€ is an English Christmas song written by John Henry Hopkins in 1857 for a Christmas pageant while he was a clergy at the General Theological Seminary in New York City. Hopkins wrote and composed the music all by himself which is commendable, and more because most writers do not compose their songs themselves. The hymn was not published until 1863 after Hopkins saw the popularity that the song had achieved, the song was published in his book, carols, hymns, and songs.

Lyrics

1.ย

We three kings of Orient are;

bearing gifts we traverse afar,

field and fountain, moor and mountain,

following yonder star.

Refrain:

O star of wonder, star of light,

star with royal beauty bright,

westward leading, still proceeding,

guide us to thy perfect light.

2.

Born a King on Bethlehemโ€™s plain,

gold I bring to crown him again,

King forever, ceasing never,

over us all to reign. [Refrain]

3.ย

Frankincense to offer have I;

incense owns a Deity nigh;

prayer and praising, voices raising,

worshiping God on high. [Refrain]

4.ย

Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume

breathes a life of gathering gloom;

sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,

sealed in the stone-cold tomb. [Refrain]

5.

Glorious now behold him arise;

King and God and sacrifice:

Alleluia, Alleluia,

sounds through the earth and skies. [Refrain]

The hymn was published 6 years later in 1871.

Lyrics

1.

What child is this who laid to rest

On Maryโ€™s lap is sleeping

Whom angels greet with anthems sweet

While shepherds watch are keeping?

The King of Kings salvation brings

Let loving hearts enthrone him

The babe, the son of Mary

But if youโ€™ll really hold me tight

But as long as youโ€™d love me so

How Iโ€™ll hate going out in the storm

But if you really grab me tight

All the way home Iโ€™ll be warm
